MADE NEW COUNSELING x LAURIE CARMICHAEL, LMFT

NOVEMBER 2025 NEWSLETTER

While on a recent trip to visit family in Central Illinois, I had the privilege of experiencing Fall foliage like I never have before. I wanted to share some of that beauty with you.

This newsletter edition is a brief photo journal of magnificent colors and natural landscape through state parks in Illinois and Indiana.

Driving down quiet roads like this one felt like meandering through a painting. While you look at it, take a deep breathe in and out. And as you do so, imagine what type of natural beauty speaks most to you. And notice how you feel as you imagine it.

What are the colors, sounds, smells around you in that natural environment you are picturing?

Even though it was brisk outside, being enveloped under this canopy of trees felt warm, safe, and inviting. A reminder that no matter what is happening on the ground level of life, there is so much perspective to be gained by looking up and seeing outside of my own sphere.

How might using nature as a means of holding perspective be helpful to you in this current season of life?

This covered bridge felt symbolic of crossing into a new season. A season of shedding old patterns and ways of thinking that may not serve you anymore. A season of acknowledging the growth that has taken place this year and looking ahead to the next.

The reflection in the water reminds me of how growth really only occurs when we have metaphorical mirrors held up by others to help us look at ourselves honestly and humbly. Change is hard, but never impossible.

Journal prompts for reflection:

  • As we come into the season of Fall, is there anything old that you are ready to shed? What “leaves” need to change color and fall to make room for new growth? (An example I have been pondering is continuing to shed my need for high achievement in all areas of life and rather finding where I can implement the philosophy of “good enough” more often.)

  • What are some ways that you can make time to find beauty in the natural world as a means of recharging and finding renewed perspective?

  • What has brought you the most joy in recent times? What has brought you peace? Who have you shared these moments with?

  • What are some of your favorite memories from the season of Fall? Did your family have any special traditions around this time? Are there any foods or beverages that evoke a sense of warmth and coziness for you? Any scents that are special because of the memories they bring up for you?

  • Have you been contemplating any part of your life that you would like to change, simplify, or process? What steps have you taken towards that goal? Would reaching out for support from a friend, community member, religious leader, or therapist be helpful in walking with you through those changes?

What has filled your soul recently?
